Can ChatGPT hack my app?
ChatGPT itself won't autonomously hack you, but an attacker using ChatGPT can. LLMs lower the skill floor for attack research — basic XSS, SQL injection, and auth-bypass probes are now one prompt away. The bar to defend has risen; the bar to attack has fallen.
What happens in 2026 attack workflows:
- An attacker downloads your site's JavaScript bundle.
- They paste it into ChatGPT with prompt 'find security issues in this code'.
- ChatGPT flags leaked API keys, missing auth, exposed admin endpoints, unsafe eval() calls.
- The attacker exploits what the model found.
ChatGPT isn't the attacker — it's the attacker's research assistant. This doesn't change what you have to defend against; it changes the volume. Bugs that used to be found by skilled attackers in weeks are now found by anyone in minutes.
Additionally, LLM-powered agents (Claude Code, Cursor Agent, Windsurf) can autonomously scan + attempt exploits. Defensive posture must assume these exist.
The defense: close the basic-hygiene bugs. Leaked secrets, missing authz, SQL injection, BOLA — all the things an LLM will find in your code. Once those are gone, you're back to the normal attacker skill curve.
